He stood at the altar, stunned to see his gorgeous soul mate walking down the aisle. Moments later, she was standing in front of him. He made the biggest smile ever. They began saying their vows to each other. Afterwards, they exchanged rings and kissed as a newlywed couple, destined to be together for several years.

She was getting ready one evening, staring in the mirror, gliding her fingers across the top of her head. He came up behind her, hugged her and smiled. She turned to him and nervously said, “I don’t know how you’re going to do it. And it’s scary to think about how…” He calmed her down, gave her a kiss and said, “I’ll be okay. I have been, haven’t I? And I want you to be okay.” She took a deep breath, put on her hat, and they went on their way to the hospital.

He sat in the waiting room while she was with the doctor. He took out his wallet and looked at the photo placed in it. It was a picture of him and his wife at their prom along with a message he wrote on the back. He gave a subtle smile, but began to tear up. His wife walked out of the room, came over and sat next to him. “Honey, why are you crying. Please don’t cry.” He looked up at her and said, “It’s because you’re beautiful. Five years ago. Five years later. You’re the most amazing woman in my life. And I don’t want you to… I… can’t…” She took off her cap, lifted his head up and said, “I’m still here. I’m not going anywhere yet. Honey, you’re the one that’s amazing. You stood up for me when everyone else picked on me for having my hair fall out. You were with me when I had my first chemotherapy. You married me knowing that maybe one day, I won’t be with you. When my life took a turn for the worst, you made it better. You stuck around. You saved me.” He began to cry, kissed the top of her head, and told her that he loved her.

The sun was beginning to set. He took his prom picture out of his pocket and turned it over. He read the lines quietly to himself. He took off his ring, raised it to the sun, and repeated the lines out loud. “Wherever you are, you’ll always be my most beautiful shining sun.” He kissed the photo and set it down by the gravestone, “I miss you, Beautiful.”
